Things You Need To Know About Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is the process of removal of a tooth from its bone socket. You may wonder why a tooth would need to be extracted. Well, there are a number of tooth infections which cannot be treated with procedures like filling and root canal. In this scenario, the infected tooth would be there only to transmit infection. Thus, the dentist may decide to remove the tooth entirely.

Having that said, some of the most common reasons for tooth extraction are as under:

  • Existence of extra teeth which stop other teeth from coming in.
  • Sometimes, the baby teeth do not fall out on time, leading to the blocked eruption of adult teeth.
  • Sometimes, tooth removal may be the prerequisite for proper application of braces.
  • People receiving radiation in the head and neck may have to get tooth or some of teeth removed.
  • Use of cancer drug can lead to the weakened immune system due to which it becomes easier for the teeth and gums to get infected. In this situation, tooth extraction may turn out to be the only possible solution.
  • The most common among the cases of tooth extraction is wisdom teeth removal. Most of the people get their wisdom teeth growing in the direction of other teeth. As the wisdom teeth grow, they push the neighboring teeth, leading to the pain in an area. In this situation, the dentists usually decide to remove the wisdom teeth.

Preparation and removal

The patients need to be prepared before tooth removal. During first dental appointment, the dentists analyze the level of damage due to infected tooth. Dental x-rays are taken during the process to get the clear picture of the inner part of the teeth and hidden areas under the gums.

At the day of surgery, you will be given anesthesia that is going to either numb the area or put your out of conscious. If you have a runny nose, you may be asked to get it treated before undergoing the procedure. Furthermore, you will be advised not to smoke during the day of surgery.

After the surgery is done, you will need someone to drive you back to home because you are going to be under the effects of anesthesia.

Follow up

After the surgery is done, your dentist will give you a set of instructions regarding what to do. There is going to be a lot of aftercare that you will have to take into consideration in order to make the procedure a success. One thing worth mentioning here is that the risk of dry socket is always there if you don’t take good care of the oral cavity after tooth extraction.

Make sure that you visit your dentist regularly after the tooth removal.
